Elementary Fluency & Comprehension
Grade: Upper Elementary
Curriculum: Bookworms—Differentiated Instruction
Instructor: Dr. Sharon Walpole
What makes this a strong model?
Explicit syllable work, allowing learners to segment and blend base words with the suffix “-able” and making longer words more accessible by breaking them up into meaningful parts
Integration of fluency and comprehension by having learners read connected text chorally and independently after decoding multisyllabic words, practicing pacing, accuracy, and expression while monitoring for meaning
Simultaneous support of literal and inferential understanding by targeting comprehension with text-dependent questions
Learners are prompted to notice details, interpret figurative language, and support their opinions with evidence from the text
