Elementary Fluency & Comprehension

Grade: Upper Elementary

Curriculum: Bookworms—Differentiated Instruction

Instructor: Dr. Sharon Walpole

What makes this a strong model?

  • Explicit syllable work, allowing learners to segment and blend base words with the suffix “-able” and making longer words more accessible by breaking them up into meaningful parts

  • Integration of fluency and comprehension by having learners read connected text chorally and independently after decoding multisyllabic words, practicing pacing, accuracy, and expression while monitoring for meaning

  • Simultaneous support of literal and inferential understanding by targeting comprehension with text-dependent questions

    • Learners are prompted to notice details, interpret figurative language, and support their opinions with evidence from the text
